I had the unique experience of working with leather to create a gun holster for Homenides de Histangua in A Flea in Her Ear at Mary Moody Northen Theatre in 2019.

As it was my first time working with leather, I was supervised as I created the pattern and used various leatherworking tools. I used the costume designer's mockup to create a pattern and traced the floral design he provided onto the pocket portion of the holster using a swivel knife. I used a pear shader and different beveling tools to give the carving more dimension and detail. I also stamped the strap as well as the edge of the holster using special leather stamps and a mallet. I saddle stitched the pocket to the part of the holster actually worn by the actor and secured each separate piece with screws. As a finishing touch, I dyed the leather to be a darker brown and sealed the back of the holster with gum tragacanth.
